Location: Grand Rapids, MI
Artprize is an independently organized annual competition that takes place each fall for 19 days in Grand Rapids Michigan. Monetary prizes are awarded by public vote as well as awards given by a jury of art experts. Artists from many locations exhibit their art in various places throughout the downtown area. The event attracts over 500,000 visitors and has been successful for the past nine years.
Donna VanderPlas created these watercolor paintings of her granddaughter to create awareness of rare diseases. The response from conversations with people at Artprize that has been overwhelming. Amazingly enough two women that she spoke to have adult daughters with desmoid tumors. There were many stories about rare cancers too. It was an incredible experience.
